2020 Subaru Legacy Reviews: Legacy vs Toyota Camry

2020 Subaru Legacy Reviews: Legacy vs Toyota Camry

The 2020 Subaru Legacy is a sedan like no other. In fact, it is so remarkable that Subaru is even referring to it as the SUV of sedans. Completely redesigned for 2020, the Subaru Legacy has a lot to offer and this 2020 Subaru Legacy review will cover all that's great about this sedan in a friendly 2020 Subaru Legacy vs Toyota Camry face off.

2020 Subaru Legacy

Historically, the Subaru Legacy has not been very popular. However, the 2020 redesign aims to change that with technological advancements and massive engineering upgrades including the return of a turbocharged engine. The Legacy maintains Subaru's safety reputation and standard all-wheel-drive system while being not only better to drive and easier to use, but more comfortable as well.

To put it simply, the Legacy is basically a lowered Outback. You'll get incredible cargo capacity, improve handling, precision steering, new accident avoidance tech, and a turbocharged four-cylinder as an engine upgrade. It also comes standard with a CVT and all-wheel drive which is rare to be seen in this segment.

Under the hood on most trim levels is the 2.5 litre 4-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, taking you from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. It's not terrible, and the fuel economy is 8.7 L/100 km city and 6.2 L/100 km highway. Available on the Legacy Limited and standard on the Touring is the XT engine, a 2.4 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that boasts 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque to take you from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds without sacrificing performance in higher altitudes. Fuel economy on this engine is 9.8 L/100 km city and 7.3 L/100 km highway.

2020 Toyota Camry

On the other hand, the Toyota Camry offers more model selection and has the advantage of being built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform that gives it an improvement in moving, turning, and stopping. There's even a hybrid option for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint that combines electric power with a 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine delivering 208 net horsepower. Camry Hybrids have three options to choose from.

The engine options on the 2020 Camry are the 2.5 L 4-cylinder with 203 horsepower on the LE, XLE, and SE and 206 horsepower on the XSE or the 3.5 L 6-cylinder with 301 horsepower on the XLE V6 and XSE V6. You'll get an 8-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission standard but will have to add on the Dynamic Torque Control AWD.

Our Verdict

The 2020 Subaru Legacy may not be as flashy as the Toyota Camry, but those looking for an SUV type vehicle without the price tag would do well with it. With a stiffer structure, smartly tuned suspension, and standard all-wheel-drive, the Legacy is perfect for handling winding mountain roads, so if you're looking to cross the Rockies anytime soon, this is the sedan for the job.
