What's New in the 2022 Subaru WRX?

What's New in the 2022 Subaru WRX?

The Subaru WRX is a high-performance, rally-inspired sports car that creates devoted loyalty among its drivers. Combining genuine power under the hood with a luxurious interior, it's a standout model that competes with big-name vehicles coming in at several times the price.

And the great news for WRX fans is that an all-new 2022 model has been teased by Subaru, and seems set to take this legendary vehicle to even greater heights. Final details are yet to be officially confirmed, but read our 2022 Subaru WRX review to find out what we know and suspect so far.

2022 Subaru WRX Specs: Powertrain

The 2022 Subaru WRX is likely to see an upgraded engine giving a huge boost to performance. The design is said to be based on the Subaru 2.4L Boxer turbo mill featured on the current generation of the WRX, but with optimized tuning to take the output from 310 horsepower up to an immense 400 hp, combined with 361lb-ft of torque for searing acceleration. As with the current lineup, it's almost certain that a slightly less aggressive powertrain will also be available, with an output thought to hover around the 300 hp and 280lb-ft level.

But whichever engine winds up in the 2022 WRX, Subaru seem set to continue offering a choice of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a six-speed manual gearbox, both paired with all-wheel drive as standard.

Updated Exterior Design

From the sneak previews seen so far, the 2022 WRX's exterior stylings will be modified and updated rather than completely redesigned. Expect a larger grille and sleeker headlights to give the front end a more aggressive appearance, combined with a prominent air-intake on the hood to complete the confident outline.

Interior and Infotainment

The current levels of interior comfort look certain to be at least maintained in the new 2022 Subaru WRX, with strong rumours that the currently optional Recaro seats will be made standard issue. One potential improvement over the current model would be the long-called-for improvements to sound insulation to take the edge off the WRX's road noise.

As far as infotainment is concerned, the 2022 WRX is likely to improve on the current 7" touchscreen, although whether the huge 11.6" version seen in more recent Subaru models appears is unknown. The current smartphone integration options of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are sure to be maintained, and the smart money is on the optional navigation becoming standard across the range.

Active Safety

And lastly, plumping for the CVT version of the new WRX will bring the Subaru EyeSight safety system into play, with key features including forward collision warnings, automated emergency braking, lane departure warnings, and more.

2022 Subaru WRX Review: The Verdict

The current incarnation of the Subaru WRX is already an immensely powerful and comfortable sports car, but the 2022 refresh seems certain to reach new levels of desirability. It seems unwise to expect a revolutionary new model, but the upgrades and enhancements revealed so far confirm that WRX fans will be in no way disappointed by the upcoming release.
